Artificial Intelligence: A Revolution in the World of Work

The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is radically transforming the professional landscape, leading to the creation of new job profiles and renewing the skills required. According to the Report of the Italian Association for Industrial Research (Airi), presented in Rome during the Day for Industrial Innovation, the sectors most affected will not be manual ones, but rather those that require intellectual and communication skills.

Italian Preparation for Change

Despite the expected impact of technology, more than half of Italians do not have the digital skills needed to face this transition. The Italian government has developed the Italian Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2024-26, an ambitious plan that aims to mobilize 4 billion euros in public and private investments.

Anna Maria Bernini, Minister of University and Research, emphasizes the importance of research and innovation as drivers of development for the country. Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, adds that it is crucial to incentivize the skills needed for a new workforce capable of leading the digital transformation.

New Professions and European Challenges

Airi’s report highlights the emergence of several new AI-related professions, including:

  • IA ethicist: responsible for the ethics and legality of AI-generated content.
  • IT Infrastructure Manager: expert in the integrated management of communication networks.
  • IA developer: designer of AI algorithms and systems.
  • Legal tech consultant: lawyer specialized in new technology law.
  • Privacy engineer: designer of technological solutions compliant with privacy regulations. However, Europe is at a disadvantage when it comes to AI startups. Italy has only 0.68 startups per million inhabitants, well below Germany’s 1.99 and France’s 2.05. In addition, our country is also at the bottom of the list when it comes to graduates in information and communication technologies (ICT).

Towards a Sustainable Future

To bridge the competitive gap in the AI sector, it is essential to improve university training and ensure a constant updating of company skills. Airi suggests that an extraordinary hiring plan in universities and research centers could represent an adequate response. It is essential to find a balance between open source and closed source, ensuring accessibility to data without compromising the economic return on investments. The future of work in Italy appears promising but requires a collective effort to address the challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence.
