Increase in Asylum Requests in Italy in 2023
2023 marked a significant year for Italy in terms of migration. According to the recent OECD International Migration Outlook 2024, the number of asylum applications in the country increased by around 70% compared to the previous year, placing Italy as the fourth destination among European OECD member countries.
With 130,000 new applications, Italy surpassed its previous record from 2017, when 126,000 requests were registered. Statistics reveal that asylum seekers mainly come from countries such as Bangladesh, with 23,000 requests (+59%), Egypt, with 18,000 (+106%) and Pakistan, with 16,000 (+47%).

In the report, the OECD highlights that in 2023, the number of people applying for asylum for the first time in Italy increased by 69%, reaching a total of 131,000 individuals. Among them, the majority come from Bangladesh, Egypt and Pakistan.
Migration dynamics show a significant increase in Egyptian emigrants, with an increase of 9,300 units compared to 2022; on the contrary, requests from Georgian emigrants decreased by 200.
In terms of decisions taken, out of a total of 46,000, almost 48% were positive.
Long Term Immigration
In addition to asylum requests, in 2022 Italy welcomed approximately 235,000 new long-term immigrants, marking an increase of 15% compared to 2021. This figure includes:
- 21% for free circulation
- 24% for work
- 52% for family reasons
- 2% for humanitarian reasons
In addition, approximately 25,000 residence permits were granted to internationally mobile students and 7,600 to temporary migrant workers.
