Attack in Brasilia: a disturbing episode
A climate of tension envelops Brasilia after an attack that shook the Brazilian capital. In the Plaza de los Tres Poders, a man detonated two devices, leading to the death of the attacker himself and sowing panic among those present. This dramatic event occurs a few days before the important G20 summit, increasing concerns about national security.
The details of the attack
According to initial reports, the two devices were activated in quick succession in front of the Supreme Court. About five hundred meters away, a car loaded with presumed homemade explosives exploded, while a third bomb failed to detonate. An eyewitness described how the attacker threw the devices without saying a word, creating a scene of chaos.
The explosion was witnessed by Lauana Costa, an employee of the Court of Auditors, who was a few steps away from the site of the tragedy. The security forces immediately isolated the square and the Esplanade of the Ministries to check for the presence of further devices.
Safety measures and reactions
Supreme Court judges were evacuated and the session of Parliament was suspended. Police and firefighters crowded the area to ensure a thorough cleanup of the site. At the same time, the N2 and S2 highways were closed to facilitate the operations of the police.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva monitored the situation from the official residence in Alvorada. In response to the attack, authorities activated Operation Shield, which involves strengthening security around the Presidential Palace, including the army.
Initially identified as the owner of the exploded car, Francisco Wanderley Luiz, a 59-year-old locksmith, had left Rio do Sul after family disagreements. According to his adopted son, the man was facing serious personal problems that had led him to make drastic decisions.
A look to the future
As the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro approaches, this attack raises questions about political stability and security in Brazil. Recent events are reminiscent of similar episodes that have marked the country’s recent history and highlight growing social tension. Authorities will have to address not only the immediate consequences of this attack but also its long-term repercussions on the perception of security among Brazilian citizens.
