Developments on the Strait Bridge: The Opinion of the Evaluation Commission
The project for the construction of the Bridge over the Strait of Messina has received a favorable opinion from the Technical Commission for the Evaluation of Environmental Impact. This green light, which came from the Ministry of the Environment, is accompanied by specific additions that concern not only the natural environment, but also aspects related to the design and management of the works on land.
Conditions for the Continuation of the Project
The additions requested by the commission focus on several key factors:
- Natural environment: attention to terrestrial, marine and agricultural ecological conditions.
- Detailed planning: need for a clear plan for construction site and raw material management.
- Acoustic impact: monitoring of noise and vibrations.
Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini expressed optimism about the future of the project. He stressed that it is not “Salvini’s bridge”, but an opportunity for the country. The minister also joked about the criticisms raised by environmentalists and opponents.
“Let’s see if little fish, algae and birds allow Italy to do what everyone else is doing,” he said, noting how other nations build infrastructure without ecological obstacles.
However, recent developments have generated controversy. The leader of Avs, Angelo Bonelli, denounced an alleged political “blitz” in the Evaluation Commission. In particular, he criticized the appointment of new members by the Minister of the Environment Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.
The Voices of Criticism
Furthermore, the Cgil has raised the alarm regarding the lack of the necessary certifications for the work. The confederal secretary Pino Gesmundo has urged the government not to repeat past mistakes and to guarantee compliance with seismic regulations.
“What emerges from the INGV is very serious,” declared Gesmundo, warning of possible irregularities in the authorization process.
In response to concerns expressed by unions and environmental associations, Senator Nino Germanà defended the project, arguing that the CGIL does not have sufficient knowledge of the process required for such works.
Legambiente also made its voice heard, with president Stefano Ciafani highlighting how the project risks absorbing 13 billion euros, resources that could be allocated to other more useful construction sites.
Future Prospects
As the debate over the Strait Bridge continues to heat up between supporters and opponents, it remains to be seen how the situation will evolve. The issue represents not only an engineering challenge but also a crucial test for Italian environmental policies. It will be essential to monitor whether the resources allocated will be used responsibly and sustainably in the broader context of the country’s infrastructural development.
