Meloni and Climate Policies at COP29 in Baku

Giorgia Meloni made her entrance at COP29 in Baku, presenting the Italian government’s strategy on climate policies. The Prime Minister reiterated the commitments already made by Italy, proposing a “pragmatic” and “non-ideological” approach to climate challenges. Among her proposals, she highlighted the importance of nuclear fusion, a technology that she considers capable of “changing the rules of the game”, stating that Italy is at the forefront in this sector.

During the event, the Pope stressed that the climate emergency “does not allow for further delays”, while UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres criticized developed countries for their “greed” for the resources of developing nations.

Meloni’s Statements and the International Context

During the summit, Meloni said that Italy intends to continue to actively contribute to the fight against climate change. According to the prime minister, it is unrealistic to think of completely eliminating fossil fuels in the short term. She therefore argued that an approach that uses all available energy sources is necessary, including renewables, biofuels and nuclear fusion, following the principle of technological neutrality. Italy has already organized international meetings on the topic of nuclear fusion under the presidency of the G7 and is ready to relaunch this technology.

Meloni also spoke of the need for a new energy diplomacy to promote opportunities for collaboration between countries in the North and South of the world. However, the prime minister’s statements have sparked critical reactions from environmentalists and think tanks. Greenpeace has commented that the intervention seems to have been written by the energy industry, while experts such as Stefano Ciafani of Legambiente have questioned the sustainability of the proposals put forward.

The Future Vision: A Call for Shared Responsibility

Pope Francis expressed concern about the urgency of climate issues in his messages to COP29. He called for consideration of common but differentiated responsibilities, calling for the emergence of a new collective goal on climate finance.

The Pope’s appeals focus on the need for innovative and fair financial solutions to support the countries most vulnerable to climate change. He stressed that it is essential to ensure sustainable development for all. COP29 is therefore an important opportunity to reconsider global commitments towards a more sustainable future. With the heated debate between technological innovation and environmental responsibility, it will be crucial to find a balance between economic progress and environmental protection in the coming years.
