Italy and the climate challenge: a pragmatic approach
During her speech at Cop29 in Baku, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reiterated Italy’s commitment to the fight against climate change. Meloni underlined the importance of a pragmatic approach rather than an ideological one, warning that without this vision there is a risk of moving away from the objectives set.
A balanced energy mix
Meloni highlighted the need for a balanced energy mix to facilitate the transition to renewable sources. She said it is essential to use all available technologies to achieve the ambitious goals set in Dubai.
“Cooperation between major emitters and adequate financial support are key to success!” Meloni said, emphasizing the importance of sharing responsibilities between developed and emerging countries.
The prime minister also acknowledged that there are currently no viable alternatives to fossil fuels. She insisted on the need for a realistic vision:
- It is also essential to consider biofuels and nuclear fusion, the latter in particular could represent a significant turning point.
Italy is at the forefront of nuclear fusion research, having already organized a dedicated meeting during the G7.
The responsibility of the new generations
Meloni concluded her speech by stressing that the future of the fight against climate change depends on the actions taken today.
“It is our job to determine whether we succeed or fail,” he said. “Even though we may not see the results of our efforts directly, what matters is that we secure a better future for generations to come.”
The president shared a personal message, recalling her role as a mother and the importance of policies aimed at improving the world for her daughter and future generations.
In an increasingly complex global context, Italy proposes itself as a protagonist in the international dialogue on climate, seeking solutions that can combine sustainability and pragmatism. The road to energy transition will require collective commitment and a shared vision to address the environmental challenges of the future.
