Italy and the challenge of climate change
During her speech at Cop29 in Baku, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reiterated Italy’s commitment to the fight against climate change. According to Meloni, it is essential to adopt a pragmatic rather than ideological approach to avoid moving away from successful objectives.
A balanced energy mix
Meloni stressed the importance of a balanced energy mix to facilitate the transition to sustainable practices. She said:
“We have to use all available technologies.”
In particular, Italy is already investing a large part of its budget, over four billion euros, in climate initiatives in Africa. This commitment includes support for funds such as the Green Climate Fund and other initiatives to promote the involvement of Multilateral Development Banks.
The Prime Minister insisted on the need for decarbonization to occur in a sustainable way, taking into account the health of production and social systems. The goal is to protect the environment without forgetting the importance of man.
Global collaboration and shared responsibility
Meloni acknowledged that achieving the goals set in Dubai requires global cooperation, especially from major emitters. She said:
“Responsibilities must be shared.”
Furthermore, he highlighted that there are currently no viable alternatives to fossil fuels, encouraging a realistic approach that also includes biofuels and nuclear fusion as potential solutions.
In closing, Meloni expressed a strong personal message, affirming how important it is to work to ensure a better environment for future generations. She quoted William James to emphasize that every action counts in the fight against climate change.
An urgent matter
The Pope, through his message to COP29, called attention to the preservation of creation, calling it one of the most urgent issues of our time. The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, highlighted that:
“We should act as members of one global family.”
This appeal underlines the importance of international cooperation in the fight against climate change and the need for urgent action.
Looking to the future, Meloni’s words and the Pope’s position remind us that the fight for a sustainable environment is a collective responsibility that requires commitment and collaboration from every corner of the planet.
