Weather Emergency in Spain: Torrential Rains and Floods

Spain is facing a new wave of bad weather, with torrential rains that have already caused serious flooding in several provinces. The situation is particularly critical in the province of Malaga and southern Tarragona, where authorities have had to evacuate numerous areas due to the worsening weather conditions.

Critical Situation in Malaga

With the red alert activated due to heavy rains, the centre of Malaga has been heavily affected.

Heavy rainfall flooded shopping centers, homes and even the Clinical Hospital, where significant damage was recorded in the spaces dedicated to analysis laboratories. Dozens of homes in the Campanillas neighborhood were evacuated after more than 3,000 people were already forced to leave their homes near the Guadalhorce River. Schools and universities closed, while train connections between Malaga and Madrid were cut off. In the province of Malaga, municipalities such as Benamargosa and Velez-Malaga have suffered floods from local rivers, causing damage to infrastructure and flooding. Firefighters and civil protection have evacuated more than 1,100 people from campsites and Roma settlements in Torre del Mar.

Extreme Risks in the South of Tarragona

The situation in southern Tarragona is equally alarming. The State Meteorological Agency has issued a red alert for extreme risk due to rainfall that could exceed 180 liters per square meter in less than 12 hours. Local authorities have suspended school activities and closed public facilities. The alert has caused partial closures on the AP 7 motorway towards Catalonia, creating kilometre-long queues despite traffic restrictions.

A Look to the Future

The red alert will remain in force until dawn in several provinces such as Malaga, Granada and northern Castellón. The province of Valencia, already hit hard two weeks ago by a similar emergency, now looks to the sky with concern. After the disaster that caused at least 222 victims, the search continues to find the missing. In an attempt to prevent further damage, extraordinary measures have been organized such as barricades with sandbags to protect the banks of the streams. The immediate future remains uncertain as communities prepare to face new challenges related to this extreme weather.
