Women Feeding the Future: Excellent Green Projects Rewarded

From yoga in the picturesque lavender fields to the agri-gelateria that brings life back to a small village, passing through the transformation of wool into clothes and the welcoming of foreign workers in social farms, these are some of the initiatives celebrated in the second edition of the “Friends of the Earth, stories of women who feed the world” award. This recognition, presented in Rome at Palazzo Rospigliosi, aims to highlight female entrepreneurs in the agri-food sector and their commitment to promoting sustainable practices.

A Growing Sector

Coldiretti Women, with almost 200,000 female-run businesses, are changing the face of Italian agriculture, tackling prejudices with determination. Among these initiatives, a significant youth representation stands out: approximately 13,000 businesses are led by women under 35, who focus on innovation and technology to modernize the sector.

According to Ettore Prandini, president of Coldiretti, “women are emerging as protagonists” in the business landscape, bringing innovation and sustainability to various fields. The profile of female entrepreneurs is high: 25% have a degree and many of them combine agricultural activity with other practices such as agritourism and educational farms.

Female Resilience in the Agricultural Sector

Mariafrancesca Serra, head of Women at Coldiretti, highlights a crucial aspect: female-run agricultural businesses prove to be more resilient than the average in the sector. These entrepreneurs not only face difficult challenges but also manage to implement effective management models. Social responsibility is another distinguishing feature of women-owned businesses. Women in the industry don’t just farm; they create support networks and opportunities for local communities.

Towards a Sustainable Future

The recognition of the Coldiretti Women represents only the beginning of a journey towards greater inclusion in the world of agriculture. With the continued growth of women-owned businesses and the adoption of sustainable practices, the future seems promising. The awarded excellences are evidence of how the female contribution can renew and strengthen the Italian agricultural sector, offering new perspectives and opportunities for all.
