Women and Innovation: Success Stories in the Agricultural Sector
In an ever-changing agricultural landscape, women are emerging as key figures in promoting sustainable and innovative practices. From practicing yoga among lavender fields to opening agri-gelato shops, turning wool into clothes and welcoming foreign workers to social farms, these entrepreneurs are rewriting the rules of the industry.
The “Friends of the Earth” Award
Recently, the second edition of the “Friends of the Earth” award took place at Palazzo Rospigliosi in Rome, an initiative that celebrates the contribution of Donne Coldiretti. This award is not only a showcase for green entrepreneurs, but also a tribute to their commitment and dedication.
Currently, nearly 200,000 female-run businesses are transforming the Italian agricultural landscape, courageously facing prejudices and challenges. Among these, a new generation of female entrepreneurs stands out: about 13,000 businesses are led by women under 35 who invest in innovation and technology.
“Women are emerging as protagonists, bringing innovation, sustainability and passion to every field”, says Ettore Prandini, president of Coldiretti. The profile of female entrepreneurs is very high: 25% of them have a degree and half combine agricultural activity with other initiatives such as agritourism, educational farms and agri-cosmetics.
Resilience for Women
Mariafrancesca Serra, head of Donne Coldiretti, underlines the importance of female-run agricultural businesses. In a sector traditionally dominated by men, these businesses prove to be the most resilient and capable of facing significant entrepreneurial challenges.
Their management experience is a valuable resource that helps create a more sustainable future for Italian agriculture.
With the increasing number of women in agriculture and their commitment to innovative and sustainable practices, the future of agriculture looks promising. The vision of women-led agriculture not only enriches the economic landscape but also offers new opportunities to build stronger and more aware communities.
