Women and Innovation in the Agricultural Sector: Recognized Excellences

From yoga among lavender fields to the agri-gelateria that revitalizes small villages, passing through the transformation of wool into clothes and the social farms that welcome foreign workers, these are just some of the initiatives awarded in the second edition of the “Friends of the Earth: stories of women who feed the world” award. Presented in Rome, at Palazzo Rospigliosi, this award intends to celebrate the commitment and dedication of green entrepreneurs, offering a showcase to the Coldiretti Women.

The Impact of Women in Agriculture

Today, the female entrepreneurial landscape is booming. There are almost 200,000 female-run businesses that have revolutionized the agricultural sector, facing prejudices and obstacles. Among these, a significant number of young female entrepreneurs stand out: approximately 13,000 businesses are led by women under 35, with a particular focus on innovation and technology.

According to Ettore Prandini, president of Coldiretti, women are emerging as true protagonists in the sector. Their education is high: 25% have a degree and many of them combine farming with other businesses such as agritourism, educational farms and agri-cosmetics. These women not only cultivate the land but are also committed to a broader social vision.

Resilience and Management Capabilities

Mariafrancesca Serra, head of Women at Coldiretti, underlines the importance of female agricultural businesses in a sector historically dominated by men.

Female-owned businesses prove to be the most resilient, capable of tackling complex business challenges with great managerial dexterity. These female entrepreneurs not only represent a significant change in the agricultural landscape but also help create a more sustainable future for the entire sector.

Towards a Sustainable Future

The recognition of women in agriculture is not only a personal achievement but also marks the beginning of a new era. With a growing number of female entrepreneurs bringing innovation and sustainability to the core of their businesses, the agricultural sector can look to the future with optimism. The challenge now is to support and amplify these voices to continue to feed the world responsibly and fairly.
