Postponement of Hearings in the European Parliament: Fitto and Kallas Under Scrutiny
The Regional Affairs Committee of the European Parliament has decided to postpone to an indefinite date the evaluation of the hearing of Raffaele Fitto, candidate for Vice President of the European Commission. This decision, communicated by parliamentary sources to ANSA, is in line with the similar postponement for Kaja Kallas, candidate for EU High Representative. Both postponements are the result of an internal agreement within the Ursula majority, which agreed to freeze the vote on six executive vice-presidents pending further mediation.
Raffaele Fitto’s Hearing: A Commitment to Europe
During his hearing, Raffaele Fitto shared his vision for a stronger and more cohesive Europe. He stressed that his role is not to represent a party or a Member State, but rather the common interest of the Union. Fitto said:
“I will always act in the interests of our union and our citizens.”
Cohesion policy was defined by Fitto as fundamental to reduce territorial disparities and respond to demographic challenges. He reiterated the importance of an open dialogue between the different European political cultures, highlighting that this diversity is a resource.
Fitto also proposed a simplification of cohesion policy, which accounts for a third of the EU’s multiannual budget. His vision is based on three key points:
- Reconnect local autonomies with personalized choices
- Establish multi-level governance
- Responding to new climate and digital challenges
Future Prospects: A Crucial Role for Italy
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed concern about requests from some members of the Democratic Party to exclude Fitto from the executive vice-presidency. Meloni asked for clarification on the official position of the PD, stressing that such a move could damage Italian interests in strategic sectors.
The prime minister praised the competence shown by Fitto during the hearing, acknowledging that members of the Italian left also appreciated his abilities.
The future of European politics seems to depend on effective cooperation between Commission members and the ability to address global challenges with unity. Fitto’s proactive approach could play a crucial role in shaping the European agenda in the coming years.
