Raffaele Fitto and the Future of Europe: An Opportunity to Rethink Cohesion

Raffaele Fitto, Commissioner-designate, opened his hearing at the European Parliament with a reflection on his political career. He stressed the importance of a cohesive and strong Europe, saying he was ready to make his experience available for the common good. This speech marks a crucial moment for the European Union, at a time when significant votes on new Commissioners are approaching.

A Crucial Vote Coming Soon

During the hearing, Fitto expressed optimism about the next vote scheduled for tomorrow, despite some indications of postponement. Carlo Fidanza, head of the FdI delegation, described the hearing as “solid and concrete”, highlighting how Fitto answered every question with seriousness. Fitto reiterated his commitment to promoting cohesion as a central element of his mission. He defined cohesion policy as essential to addressing disparities between regions and territories of the European Union.

“Cohesion is at the heart of European integration and must address the demographic challenges that lie ahead”, commented Fitto.

Cohesion Policy: Simplifying and Responding to Challenges

Fitto outlined three key points for an effective cohesion policy:

  • Reconnecting local autonomies: Decisions must take into account territorial specificities.
  • Multi-level governance: A collaborative approach between various levels of government is required.
  • Responding to new challenges: It is crucial to address issues such as climate change and digitalisation. Furthermore, Fitto discussed the importance of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), promising collaboration with the Commissioner for Economy to ensure that Member States implement the necessary reforms by 2026.

Towards a Responsible Future

Fitto concluded his hearing by recalling the collective responsibility of Member States in pursuing the well-being of European citizens. He quoted Alcide De Gasperi, one of the founding fathers of Europe, underlining the importance of historical memory in building the future. With this spirit of responsibility and openness to dialogue, Raffaele Fitto is preparing to face the future challenges of the European Union. His vision could represent a significant step towards greater integration and cohesion between the various Member States, in an increasingly complex political context.
