Lorenza Guttadauro: From the Boss' Defense to the Ministry
Lorenza Guttadauro lived a complex chapter of her life alongside Matteo Messina Denaro, the notorious Sicilian mafia boss. After her uncle was arrested, Lorenza took on his legal defense and supported him in the final stages of his illness. However, the young lawyer chose to leave Sicily to rebuild her life in Rome, where she now works for the Ministry of Education.
A New Professional Path
Lorenza, daughter of one of Messina Denaro’s sisters and the boss Filippo Guttadauro, began a public career after being removed from the register of lawyers.
“She was hired following a competition and is currently employed at the pension office of a province,” said Anna Paola Sabatini, general director of the regional school office for Lazio.
His family, however, remained involved in the crime: his mother Rosalia was sentenced to 14 years for being considered a key element in communications with his brother, while his father Filippo is detained under a white life sentence.
Family Relationships and Boss Concerns
In the months before Messina Denaro’s death, Lorenza also maintained contact with the other Lorenza, the boss’s daughter. The girl had a difficult relationship with her father and had distanced herself from the family at just 18 years old. After his arrest, she resumed contact with him through letters and meetings.
After her uncle’s arrest, Lorenza Guttadauro expressed concern about the mafia boss’s health conditions. She argued that his medical problems could not be adequately treated in prison:
“His condition is very serious. I don’t think the cell can be compared to a medical clinic,” he said after questioning in February 2023.
However, these concerns seem to be contradicted by the statements of Messina Denaro himself, who in meetings with magistrates had praised the care he received behind bars.
Towards a New Era
Lorenza Guttadauro’s story represents a significant transition from a life tied to organized crime to a professional future in the public sector. While her personal choices reflect a desire for change and detachment from her family past, her story remains emblematic of the complicated family dynamics tied to the mafia in Sicily. With the hope that new generations may take different paths, her experience offers food for thought on resilience and the possibilities of redemption in a difficult context.
