Tension in Amsterdam: Tram Set on Fire After Clashes Between Fans
Last night, Amsterdam experienced moments of intense violence when a group of individuals armed with clubs and firecrackers set fire to a tram. This episode is part of a context of growing tension in the Dutch capital, fueled by recent clashes between fans of the Israeli team Maccabi and supporters of the local Ajax.
Police Intervention
Police quickly extinguished the fire and sent riot units to clear the area. In an official statement, authorities stressed that the dynamics that led to the riots remain unclear, as does the possible link with the attack on Israeli fans that occurred the previous week.
Investigations into last weekend’s clashes have led to the arrest of five new suspects, men aged between 18 and 37, from Amsterdam and surrounding areas. Four people had been arrested previously, including two minors, while another young man was released but remains under investigation.
Reactions to Violence
Footage released on X by Dutch MP Geert Wilders shows one of the participants in the incidents shouting anti-Semitic insults. A Palestinian flag was also documented near the scene of the disturbance. Police confirmed that several people had been arrested in connection with last night’s events, attributing the tram fire to the use of firecrackers thrown at the vehicle, which also caused some windows to break.
As tensions continue to persist in Amsterdam, it is crucial to monitor future developments. Local authorities are stepping up efforts to ensure public safety and prevent further violence. The current situation raises questions about how to manage sporting rivalries and the social consequences of such clashes.
