Revelations on the Regeni Case: A Key Witness Tells
The case of Giulio Regeni, the Italian researcher who disappeared and was later found dead in Cairo in 2016, continues to raise questions and doubts. Recently, during a trial involving alleged Egyptian intelligence agents, a witness provided disturbing details about a meeting that took place shortly before his disappearance.
Police Check: A Suspicious Event
According to the testimony of a German citizen, known as a “Beta witness,” an alleged Egyptian intelligence agent visited Regeni’s home in December 2015. During that meeting, Regeni’s roommate, Mohamed El Sayed, received a request for a copy of the researcher’s passport.
The witness explained that El Sayed was convinced that the operation was conducted by National Security, the Egyptian secret service. He feared that the visit would have negative consequences.
The witness, who at the time worked as a German teacher at a private school in Cairo, described how El Sayed was in a state of anxiety and fear after the encounter.
An Ambiguous Dialogue with the Agent
During the hearing, a crucial moment also emerged in which El Sayed exchanged phone numbers with the agent. However, he did not inform Regeni about the visit.
The witness revealed that El Sayed only communicated that foreigners were required to provide documents and report to the police station. This behavior suggests that El Sayed may have had some suspicions about the officer’s intentions.
Future Perspectives on the Case
The revelations that emerged from the trial put the spotlight back on a story that is still shrouded in mystery. With ongoing questions about the relationship between Italy and Egypt and pressure to obtain justice for Giulio Regeni, the hope is that these testimonies can help shed light on a case that is profoundly affecting international relations.
In a broader context, the search for truth continues to be a priority not only for Regeni’s family but also for those fighting for human rights and justice around the world.
