Arabian Sea Navigation Hazards: Houthis Escalate Threats

In recent days, the Houthi groups have reaffirmed their intention to threaten shipping off the Arabian Peninsula. This escalation of tension was initiated a year ago as a gesture of solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza. The group’s spokesman, Yahya Saree, said that Houthi forces targeted American ships in two separate attacks: an aircraft carrier and two US destroyers.

The Pentagon confirmed the attack on these warships using drones and missiles, but denied that the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln was a direct target. As reported by spokesman Pat Ryder, the two destroyers were attacked while passing through the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The attack involved “at least eight attack drones, five ballistic missiles and three cruise missiles”, all of which were successfully neutralized. Fortunately, there were no damage to the ships or injuries to the military.

The Geopolitical Context and International Reactions

This news was echoed in the context of Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit to Washington. In a meeting with Joe Biden, Herzog made strong accusations against Iran, calling it “the evil empire” and reaffirming the United States' commitment to defending Israel. He also expressed his desire to obtain support similar to that received during the Trump administration. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed a message to the Iranian people, stressing that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei fears his own people more than Israel. Netanyahu called on Iranians to remain hopeful, saying Israel stands ready to support them.

The Situation on the Ground and Possible Solutions

As tensions continue to rise, the Lebanese Ministry of Health has reported that the latest Israeli attacks have left 44 dead and 88 wounded. Hezbollah has not spared attacks against northern Israel, causing further casualties. The situation remains volatile with new offensives by both Israel and Palestinian armed groups. The US government has confirmed that it will not block military aid to Israel, despite calls to improve access to essential goods for Palestinians. However, the State Department spokesperson highlighted the progress made in this regard. This military and diplomatic escalation appears set to continue, with uncertainties over a possible ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. The international community is closely watching future developments in this complex and multifaceted context.
