Europe is preparing to face a crucial phase in the war in Ukraine, determined not to abandon Kiev in the face of Russian aggression. This moment comes as the election of Donald Trump could change the dynamics of support from the United States.

The European position

During a confirmation hearing, Kaja Kallas, a candidate for the post of EU high representative, stressed the importance of continuing to support Ukraine. She said the situation on the ground was extremely complex and insisted on the need to provide military and humanitarian aid until the end of the conflict. In a similar context, the European Parliament has scheduled an extraordinary plenary session for November 19, dedicated to celebrating “a thousand days of courage” of the Ukrainian people, with President Volodymyr Zelensky in attendance.

However, many wonder what will happen if the United States decides to reduce its military commitment. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will attend the NATO meeting in Brussels to discuss allies’ concerns and seek a common strategy.

Reactions in Europe

French President Emmanuel Macron recently met with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to discuss European security. Macron reiterated that a strong Ukraine is essential for the security of European citizens and said that support for Kiev remains a top priority for France. In Germany, the political situation is uncertain with early elections scheduled for February. CDU candidate Friedrich Merz has suggested sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine if Russia does not change course. This proposal has provoked strong reactions from Russian leaders, but Rutte has supported Merz, saying that it is necessary to put pressure on Putin.

An uncertain future

While questions about what Donald Trump will do remain unanswered, Kallas expressed hope that European allies can remain united. He also noted the links between security issues in Europe and the South China Sea. The current EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, is preparing a crucial meeting in Brussels in the coming days, where he will present the current situation in Ukraine and the needs for continued European support.

At this decisive moment, Europe must demonstrate its ability to act autonomously and responsibly. The European response to future challenges will be crucial in determining not only the fate of Ukraine, but also the geopolitical balance in the entire transatlantic area.
