Assault at the Emergency Room in Lamezia Terme: The Doctor Hit by a Relative
A disturbing episode has shaken the hospital of Lamezia Terme, where the head of the Emergency Department, Rosarino Procopio, was attacked by a relative of a patient. The situation occurred during a conversation regarding the discharge of the patient, in an already tense context.
The Accident and the Circumstances
During the interview with the family, Procopio explained that the patient could return home after completing the clinical observation and receiving the necessary therapy. However, a relative began to contest the decision. When the doctor turned to go back to his room, he was hit in the back with a truncheon, hidden under a jacket by one of the three family members present.
The timely intervention of the company security and the police forces prevented the situation from degenerating further. The officers of the Police Station, already present to escort another patient, were essential in interrupting the aggression.
Reactions and Consequences
The police are currently investigating the incident, while the local health authority has stated that it is offering legal support to Dr. Procopio. It is also preparing to file a civil action against the attacker.
In an official note, the Provincial Health Authority of Catanzaro expressed its firm condemnation of this violent act:
“Condemning a premeditated attack is sadly obvious. We expect a strong response from the competent authorities, because these phenomena damage not only healthcare personnel but also all users.”
The Company stressed that no emotional justification can be accepted for such violent behavior, reiterating that it is not tolerable to enter a hospital with tools suitable for violence.
A Perspective on the Future
This incident raises questions about the safety of healthcare workers in hospital settings. With attacks on medical staff on the rise, it is crucial that institutions take more stringent measures to ensure the protection of both workers and patients. It is hoped that incidents like this will serve as a wake-up call to promote a safer environment for all who work and receive care in hospitals.
