Assault on the Head of the Emergency Department of Lamezia Terme: The Perpetrator Arrested

An episode of violence has shaken the community of Lamezia Terme, after the head of the Emergency Department, Rosarino Procopio, was attacked with a truncheon by a family member of a patient. The attack occurred during a conversation about the patient’s discharge, sparking outrage and concern for the safety of healthcare personnel.

The Facts of the Accident

The attack occurred yesterday evening when Dr. Procopio was telling the patient’s family that the period of clinical observation had ended. During the interview, one of the three relatives began to swear at him, opposing the discharge. As Procopio walked away toward his room, he was hit in the back with a truncheon hidden under a jacket. After the attack, law enforcement intervened quickly. Officers from the Lamezia Terme Police Station arrested Carlo Sacco, a 28-year-old already known to the authorities. The arrest occurred in deferred flagrante delicto, in accordance with the new regulations against attacks on healthcare workers. Sacco is currently being held in the Police Station’s security cell awaiting validation by the judicial authority.

The Reaction of the Authorities

The Provincial Health Authority of Catanzaro expressed its solidarity with Dr. Procopio through an official statement. It emphasizes the absolute unacceptability of such acts of violence and calls for a firm response from the competent authorities.

“Condemning a premeditated attack is sadly obvious; we expect a strong response from the competent authorities,” the statement said. The press release went on to highlight that there is no justification for this type of behavior: “It is intolerable that someone enters a hospital with a truncheon.”

A Look to the Future

This episode highlights a growing problem: the increase in attacks on health workers. The health system must guarantee the safety of doctors and health workers so that they can carry out their work without fear for their safety. The authorities are called to take decisive measures to combat this phenomenon and protect those who work every day for the health of the community.
