Political Clash in View of Regional Elections

Tensions between the center-right and center-left are palpable a few days after the end of the regional election campaign. The tumultuous events of last Saturday in Bologna, where anti-fascist groups clashed with the police during a far-right march, have further inflamed tempers.

Political Reactions

After the riots, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized a left that, according to her, tolerates and supports the violent. The entire center-right took the opportunity to attack the leadership of Elly Schlein, believed to be silent about the incidents.

Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini stressed the need to close occupied social centres, describing them as “dens of criminals”. The mayor of Bologna, Matteo Lepore, responded harshly, accusing the government of inadequate management of public order and stating that “black shirts” had been sent into the city. The controversy does not stop there; the issue of justice emerges with Salvini criticizing judge Silvana Albano for her actions. The opposition denounces a climate of tension fueled by the right against the independence of the judiciary.

A Tense Election Campaign

While the congress of Magistratura Democratica is underway and a new pronouncement is awaited regarding the detentions in Albania, the centre-right’s electoral campaign is about to come to an end. The center-left presidential candidate, Michele De Pascale, while condemning the violence, emphasized that neo-fascist organizations must be dissolved. Schlein criticized the location chosen for the far-right demonstration, calling it an open wound for the country. Meanwhile, the center-right continues to talk about “hunting down the cops of the red delinquents”, with legislative proposals to immediately close down the social centers. The League has asked for an in-depth analysis of these structures.

Towards an Uncertain Future

Controversy is also intensifying around the posters put up in Bologna in view of the “No Meloni day”, considered intimidating by Forza Italia. The situation remains tense between Casapound and ANPI, with the former announcing new demonstrations against what it calls “stale institutional anti-fascism.” The police unions are calling for more severe measures against violence. In this unstable context, the Italian political future appears uncertain and full of challenges to face in the coming months.
