Hormone Therapy and Breast Cancer: A Problem to Face

A recent survey revealed that one third of women with breast cancer interrupt or do not follow hormone therapy correctly, increasing the risk of recurrence. This data, which emerged during the congress of the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (Aiom) in Rome, is in line with international research that highlights a similar problem in other countries.

The Importance of Adjuvant Therapy

Adjuvant therapy, administered after surgery, represents one of the greatest successes in oncology in the last thirty years. According to Saverio Cinieri, president of the Aiom Foundation, this therapy consists of the use of drugs that block estrogen, hormones implicated in the development of at least two-thirds of breast tumors. Alessandra Fabi, member of the national board of directors of Aiom, emphasizes that if taken correctly, hormone therapy can reduce tumor recurrences by 40% and decrease breast cancer mortality by a third. However, the survey revealed that 47% of the women interviewed are not aware that non-adherence to treatment can lead to a recurrence.

Fear of side effects, forgetfulness, and factors related to age and social context contribute to poor adherence to therapy.

Improve Communication and Adequate Information

Massimo Di Maio, president-elect of Aiom, highlights the importance of communication between oncologists and patients to increase treatment adherence rates. In response to this critical situation, Aiom and Fondazione Aiom have launched an information campaign aimed at patients. This initiative includes brochures distributed in oncology centers, webinars, and social media activities. Cinieri adds that it is essential for patients to understand the benefits of adjuvant therapy and to be informed about duration, treatment choice, and side effects. Today, there are more effective treatment options than in the past, which can also improve quality of life. Furthermore, technological innovation could provide valuable support. Research from the University of Colorado explored strategies such as text messages, mobile notifications, and smart pill boxes to facilitate correct intake of therapy.

A Look to the Future

In a context where information plays a crucial role in the health of cancer patients, it is essential to continue promoting awareness and communication. Only through targeted interventions will it be possible to improve adherence to hormone therapies and ensure better results in the fight against breast cancer.
