Manchester gears up for the 2024 MTV EMAs
With billboards decorating the city and artists arriving from all over Europe, Manchester is set to host the MTV European Music Awards. This year’s event celebrates a significant milestone: 30 years of the music awards. The event takes place tonight at the Co-op Live Arena, which is hosting the event for the first time, and includes a photography exhibition at Aviva Studios, dedicated to the most memorable moments in the history of the EMAs.
A stellar cast and fierce nominations
The event will be hosted by Rita Ora, an artist with 10 billion streams, who returns for the third time. The awards will be presented by music legends LL COOL J and mother-daughter duo Neneh Cherry and Mabel.
At the top of the list of nominations is Taylor Swift, already a protagonist in the last two years with four awards per edition, who this year competes with seven nominations including Best Artist and Best Video. But the competition is getting tough: Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter follow closely behind with five nominations each. Ayra Starr, Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar also compete for the awards with four nominations.
In the Best Italian Act category, we find names like Angelina Mango, Annalisa, Ghali, Mahmood and The Kolors. In addition, nineteen artists have the opportunity to win their first MTV EMA, including Kehlani and Tinashe in the Best R&B category.
A tribute to the pioneers of pop music
This year’s EMAs marks a special moment for Pet Shop Boys, who will receive the MTV EMA Pop Pioneer Award. With a 40-year career behind them and a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the UK’s most successful musical duo, the duo will perform together with the Manchester Camerata.
The 2024 MTV EMAs promise to be a memorable event, with performances from international stars competing for Best Collaboration. The event will be broadcast live on MTV in over 150 countries, including Italy where it will air tomorrow at 9pm on various Sky channels.
A look to the future
With such a celebration of talent and innovation, the MTV EMAs not only pays homage to past successes but also sets the stage for the future of European music. The event continues to grow in relevance and influence, reflecting global music trends and the new generations of artists ready to make their mark.
