The New Walkway at the Trevi Fountain: An Unmissable Opportunity

The Trevi Fountain, one of Rome’s most iconic symbols, now offers visitors a new perspective thanks to a temporary walkway inaugurated this morning. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri led the opening ceremony, expressing enthusiasm for this initiative that allows visitors to admire the monument while extraordinary maintenance work is underway.

Opening Details

The inauguration was attended by key figures such as the Councilor for Culture Massimiliano Smeriglio and the Superintendent Claudio Parisi Presicce. The walkway will be accessible every day from 9 am to 9 pm, except on Mondays and Fridays, when the opening will be postponed to 11 am. There is a limit of 130 people at a time, ensuring a more peaceful and controlled visiting experience.

Gualtieri stressed the importance of maintenance: “This walkway offers a unique view as we work to preserve the beauty of the Fountain. We have chosen not to deprive Romans and tourists of the opportunity to admire it during the work.” The walkway is not new; in fact, it had already been used in 2014 during a long restoration. However, the current intervention is expected to be quicker and less invasive.

Flow Management and Accessibility

To manage the number of visitors, a people counter device has been installed that will allow us to monitor access effectively.

Smeriglio said: “This system allows us to guarantee a usable experience without the pressure of the crowd. Flow management is essential to enhance the beauty of the fountain.” Five members of Zetema staff will be present to coordinate the queues and ensure orderly access.

Necessary Maintenance

Superintendent Parisi Presicce explained that extraordinary maintenance was necessary after ten years from the last intervention. The problems encountered include:

  • Deposit of biological patinas
  • Need to restore the fillings
  • Removal of limescale deposits

According to Parisi Presicce, “The walkway offers a unique perspective to appreciate the statuary groups without the influence of the crowd.”

A Look to the Future

This initiative not only aims to preserve an invaluable cultural heritage, but also represents a new opportunity to rediscover the history of the Trevi Fountain. By completing the works by December, it is expected that a significant number of visitors will be able to benefit from this unique experience before the end of the year. The walkway therefore confirms itself as a bridge between the past and the future of the Roman monument.
