A tragic event shakes Naples

On the morning of October 18, Naples was marked by a tragic episode of youth violence that led to the death of Arcangelo Correra, an 18-year-old. The boy, struck in the head by a bullet, was rushed to the Vecchio Pellegrini hospital, where his condition was found to be critical. This event rekindles the spotlight on the growing escalation of violence in the Neapolitan city.

The dynamics of the accident

According to the testimonies collected, Arcangelo was in via dei Tribunali, on the corner with piazza Sedil Capuano, when a man approached and fired a gunshot at his head. After the attack, the attacker fled the scene, leaving the young man in a desperate situation. Arcangelo Correra had a clean criminal record and has a family connection with Luigi Caiafa, another young man killed in 2020 during a robbery by a police officer. This connection highlights a tragic cycle of violence that seems to have no end.

Request for intervention and solutions

Catello Maresca, anti-mafia magistrate and consultant to the Bicameral Commission for regional issues, commented on the incident, expressing concern for the youth situation in Naples. He stated that “there is a youth issue that is even more serious than the one on Caivano” and urged the Government to intervene immediately.

“We need a Commissioner on the youth issue who can address the problem decisively and effectively,” Maresca said. He stressed the importance of a complex strategy that combines control and repression with an educational process aimed at forming an anti-mafia culture among young people.

A look to the future

This tragic episode highlights the urgent need to address the root causes of youth violence in Naples. As similar cases increase, it becomes crucial to implement effective policies that not only suppress violence but also promote educational and social opportunities for young people. The community and institutions must come together to build a future where episodes like that of Arcangelo Correra become just a sad memory of the past.
