The tragic death of Arcangelo Correra: an echo of violence in Naples

This morning, Naples experienced a new tragedy, with the death of Arcangelo Correra, a boy of just 18 years old. Initially, it was thought to be a targeted ambush, but the investigations revealed that it was a tragic accident linked to a “game” gone wrong. This event marks yet another chapter in a spiral of violence that has hit the city and the province, with three young people dead in just 17 days.

A fatal accident

According to initial reconstructions, Arcangelo was in the company of two friends, including Renato Caiafa, when the fatal shot occurred. Renato was handling a gun and, while he was trying to test it, a bullet accidentally went off, hitting Arcangelo in the head. This dramatic event led to the arrest of the young Caiafa for crimes related to illegal possession of a weapon and manslaughter.

“The police must now verify the details of the incident,” says a spokesperson for the force. Arcangelo’s death comes just days after other tragic events: on October 23, Emanuele Tufano was killed in a shooting between teenagers in the city center. And then Santo Romano, 19, died during a fight over trivial reasons.

Call to action

This escalation of violence has raised concerns among citizens and local authorities. Mayor Gaetano Manfredi recognizes that the measures implemented so far are not sufficient and emphasizes the importance of education as a fundamental tool to combat the phenomenon. Interventions must also include video surveillance and control of the territory.

“We need to work on social inclusion and education,” Manfredi said. Fear is also growing among tourism operators: many managers are reporting cancellations by guests worried about safety. Agostino Ingenito, president of a local B&B association, is calling for greater monitoring in the evening hours. In response to this critical situation, around 300 people gathered in the square today to demonstrate against violence. Gianfranco Wurzburger denounced the ease with which young people can obtain lethal weapons even online.
