Quetta attack: 25 dead, including 14 soldiers

A tragic attack hit the railway station in Quetta, Balochistan this morning, bringing the death toll to 25, including 14 members of the armed forces. The news was confirmed by Mohammed Baloch, a local police official. The explosion occurred near the ticket counter just before the departure of the Jaffar Express, a train bound for Rawalpindi in Punjab. More than 100 people were waiting for the train at the time. The injured and deceased were taken to the Quetta Civil Hospital, while authorities are investigating whether it was a suicide attack.

Claim and details of the attack

The ethnic separatist group known as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack. Jeeyand Baloch, a spokesperson for the BLA, said the suicide attack targeted a Pakistani army unit as soldiers were returning from a training session at an infantry school. The attack was reportedly carried out by a suicide bomber from the Majeed Brigade, the division in charge of suicide attacks in the BLA.

Despite the BLA’s claims, there is currently no independent confirmation that the target was actually military personnel.

Reflections on the future

The attack marks the latest in a series of violent attacks in a region already plagued by ethnic conflict and political tensions. Balochistan has seen a rise in militant activity in recent years, with the government struggling to maintain security in the province. The situation remains complex and volatile; the future of security in Balochistan depends on the authorities’ ability to address the root causes of separatism and violence. The international community is closely monitoring developments in this critical area of Pakistan, where the struggle for autonomy continues to generate deadly conflict.
