Clashes in Bologna: the anti-fascist march against CasaPound
The climate of tension exploded in Bologna during an anti-fascist demonstration that saw clashes between protesters and the police. The march, starting from Piazza del Nettuno, quickly headed towards Via Indipendenza, defying the security measures put in place by the police. The protesters' goal was clear: to oppose the picket organized by the Rete dei Patrioti near the station.
The dynamics of the clashes
During the route, a group of participants in the procession decided to move towards the Montagnola park, where the first contacts with the riot police occurred. The activists threw smoke bombs and firecrackers in the direction of the police, creating an atmosphere of chaos and confusion.
A particularly worrying episode involved a passerby, attacked by some protesters. The man, recognized by a large tattoo, was surrounded and beaten while walking under a portico with his girlfriend. Despite trying to walk away, he was injured and bleeding.
In total, around one thousand participants took part in the main procession, while a second group of around 200 anarchists organised an unannounced procession from Piazza dell’Unità.
The role of the police
The Police Headquarters explained that the blockade by the police was essential to avoid contact between the two protesting groups. While the second front of the demonstration did not give rise to direct clashes, the bulk of the anti-fascist march attempted to bypass the security cordons.
Arriving near the Pincio steps, the protesters forced the police blockade, leading to a violent encounter with a team from the Mobile Unit. After a few minutes of tension and the throwing of smoke bombs, the protesters were forced to retreat back into the park.
Conclusions and future perspectives
These events highlight the escalation of social tensions in Bologna and the intensification of political debate. While authorities seek to ensure public safety during such events, the increasing mobilization of antagonistic groups raises questions about how to address these dynamics in the future. The situation remains fluid and closely monitored by law enforcement.
