Snow Crab: Record Price in Japan

A snow crab has fetched a surprising 1.5 million yen (about 9,200 euros) at the first auction of the season held in the port of Tottori, a city in the homonymous prefecture in northern Japan. The event marks the start of the fishing season for this prized crustacean, considered a winter delicacy in the coastal region of Sanin.

A Celebration of Tradition

The season opening ceremony was attended by about 200 people, including officials from fishing cooperatives and representatives from administrative agencies. The auction, which attracted great interest, reflects the cultural and gastronomic importance of snow crab to the local community. The crabs won at the auction will be sent mainly to the Kansai region in southwestern Japan, as well as to Tottori Prefecture itself. A festival is planned there that will feature a variety of events, including a crab bingo, at least 1,000 servings of crab soup and singing performances, local media reported.

A Growing Market

In 2019, a snow crab sold at auction for a record price of around 5 million yen (equivalent to 30,600 euros). This male crustacean is sought after not only for its delicate flesh but also for its high nutritional value, making it a favorite in high-end Japanese cuisines. Looking ahead, the growing interest in snow crabs could continue to push prices to new heights. With celebratory events and auctions attracting more and more attention, the market for the prized crustacean in Japan looks set to continue to thrive. The Japanese culinary tradition is thus enriched not only with flavors but also with fascinating stories related to the fishing culture.
