The impact of the end of the protected market on energy bills
As winter approaches, Italian consumers are facing significant increases in electricity and gas bills. The long-awaited liberalization of the market, which promised benefits and savings, has disappointed expectations. Especially for those who have chosen variable-price contracts, costs have increased significantly.
Increases in gas contracts
According to an analysis conducted by Assium, the association representing managers in the energy sector, new gas contracts have recorded an average increase of 12.5% compared to six months ago. In particular, the cities most affected are Milan and Trento, where increases exceed 13%. Go into detail:
- Fixed Price Contracts:
- Milan, Trento and Trieste: 1,618 euros per year
- Rome: 1,825 euros per year
- Average increase: +6.17% compared to May.
- Variable price contracts:
- Average increase: 190 euros per year, with an average variation of 12.5%.
In Naples the increase is the most modest (+4.49%), while Milan and Trento record the highest increase (+6.6%).
Electricity bills on the rise
The electricity market has fewer territorial variations. The best current offer for a family with a consumption of 2,700 kWh per year is set at the following values:
- Fixed price: 735.08 euros
- Variable price: 732.51 euros
In both cases there is an increase compared to six months ago:
- +8.43% for the fixed price
- +7.5% for the variable price.
These increases entail an additional cost of approximately 57 euros per year for the fixed price and 51 euros per year for the variable price.
“Commercial offers clearly show the effects of price increases on the markets,” said Federico Bevilacqua, president of Assium. “Those who decide to switch to the free market face less favorable economic conditions.”
A look to the future
The savings expectations linked to the liberalization of the energy market have not materialized and now the issue requires systemic intervention by the Italian government. Consumers are demanding measures that can reduce overall energy costs. With demand increasing in the winter months and prices continuing to rise, it will be essential to find effective solutions so that families are not further burdened by ever-higher bills.
