Destruction of Unifil Facilities in Ras Naqura: A New Incident of Tension
Yesterday, an operation conducted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) led to the destruction of a fence and a concrete structure inside a United Nations position, known as Unifil, in Ras Naqura. This event has sparked strong reactions and concerns from the UN mission in Lebanon, which considers it a violation of international law.
The Israeli Army’s Response
Following protests by the UN mission, the Israeli military categorically denied that any activity was taking place at UNIFIL facilities. However, the mission stressed that the deliberate and targeted destruction of UNIFIL property was a violation of Resolution 1701, which protects the integrity of peacekeeping operations.
“It is essential that all parties involved respect the inviolability of the United Nations premises and ensure the safety of personnel,” the mission said in its statement.
Since September 30, the IDF has repeatedly asked peacekeeping forces to abandon their positions near the Blue Line for security reasons. According to the statement, these incidents are not the result of crossfire, but rather deliberate actions by the IDF.
Growing Concerns for Peacekeepers' Safety
The mission also expressed concern over the removal of two blue barrels marking the border between Lebanon and Israel. Peacekeepers directly observed the IDF removing one of the barrels, an act that could jeopardize the clarity of the UN-delineated withdrawal line.
Despite the unacceptable pressure received through various channels, the peacekeepers confirm their commitment to continue monitoring and reporting activities as required by resolution 1701. The current situation highlights a growing climate of tension in the region and raises questions about the future stability in South Lebanon.
In a global context where issues of security and respect for international law are increasingly relevant, the evolution of events in Ras Naqura will be followed closely by the international community.
