National Transport Strike: Disruptions Across Italy
In a chaotic morning, the 24-hour national strike hit buses, metros and trams across Italy. Since 5:30, public transport services have suffered significant reductions, with only 30% of staff operating during the guaranteed hours. The strike was called by the unions Filt Cgil, Fit Cisl, Uiltrasporti, Faisa Cisal and Ugl Fna to demand rights and contract renewal.
Details on the Strike and Guarantee Bands
The guaranteed time slots vary depending on the city. In Milan, the metro and some surface lines are guaranteed from 5:30 to 8:45 and from 15:00 to 18:00. In Rome, the service is active until 8:30 and from 17:00 to 20:00; in Naples, bus service will be limited from 6:30 to 9:30 and from 17:00 to 20:00. The staff of the Ferrovie del Sud Est also joined the strike.
The subways are stopped in Rome and Naples, while in Milan three subway lines are closed for their entire route. This has led to a significant increase in city traffic, with disruption also in other cities such as Bologna.
Reasons for the Strike
The unions stressed that the strike was called for several reasons, including:
- Renewal of the national contract
- Lack of resources
- Lack of programming policies
- Sector reform
- Health and safety at work
Negotiations for the renewal of the national contract have been interrupted due to the attitude of the employers' associations. The unions are asking for a concrete commitment from the Ministry of Labor and Infrastructure to speed up the process.
A Look to the Future
With participation exceeding 90% in some regions such as Umbria, it is clear that workers' demands cannot be ignored. The current situation highlights not only the difficulties in the public transport sector but also the urgent need for dialogue between unions and employers. Without a timely agreement, further disruption to local public services is likely in the coming months.
