Israel Bans Unrwa: What This Means for Palestinian Aid
Israel’s Knesset has approved a law prohibiting the United Nations' Palestinian refugee agency, Unrwa, from operating in Israel and East Jerusalem within a three-month timeframe.
In recent days, the situation in Gaza has become increasingly critical. Medical sources report that 27 people have died as a result of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attacks, with a significant number of casualties in the northern Strip. Among the latest victims are also three children, killed in an airstrike near Rafah.
The UN has issued a warning about the grave situation in the Gaza Strip, where over 42 million tons of debris and explosive remnants of war pose a continuing threat to civilians. Restrictions on the entry of specialized personnel and equipment for disarming explosive devices further complicate the situation.
United Nations experts warn that, in addition to war remnants, asbestos released into the air from the destruction of infrastructure will continue to affect local communities for years. A recent analysis revealed that over 65% of structures in the Strip have been damaged or destroyed. However, Israeli authorities continue to hinder humanitarian efforts, preventing organizations from providing food assistance to residents in besieged areas.
The IDF announced that the Kfir Brigade has recently intensified operations in the northern Gaza Strip, killing approximately 50 terrorists in direct clashes and raids. The Israeli military reported finding arsenals used by Hamas militants to store weapons and ammunition. In addition, the Iranian representative to the UN condemned the recent Israeli actions against the UNRWA agency, stressing the organization’s crucial role in assisting Palestinian refugees. Such measures are seen as an attempt to deprive Palestinians of essential services.
The situation in the region remains tense and complex. With the escalation of conflict between Israel and Hamas and growing concerns for the safety of civilians in Gaza, it is crucial that the international community intervenes to facilitate constructive dialogues and ensure humanitarian access to affected populations. Without decisive action, the cycle of violence risks perpetuating itself, further exacerbating an already devastating crisis.
