Fabio Cagnazzo, a Carabinieri colonel, played a significant role in the investigations into the most influential Camorra clans in the Naples area and province. Formerly provincial commander in Frosinone, Cagnazzo had already been under investigation for Vassallo’s death for about a year and a half. According to the investigators' reconstructions, Vassallo would have confided his discoveries on the matter to the former chief prosecutor of Vallo della Lucania, Alfredo Greco. Before he could formalize a complaint to a carabiniere trusted by Greco himself, the mayor would have been killed.
