Fourteen years after the murder of Angelo Vassallo: four arrests and new hopes for justice

The murder of Angelo Vassallo, the mayor of Pollica brutally killed on September 5, 2010, resurfaces with new developments. Four people have been arrested on charges of voluntary homicide, and the investigations may finally reveal the truth behind a crime that has left a deep mark on the heart of Cilento.

The arrests and the charges

Law enforcement has arrested four individuals: Carabinieri officer Fabio Cagnazzo, justice collaborator Romolo Ridosso, entrepreneur Giuseppe Cipriano and former brigadier Lazzaro Cioffi. All are accused of being involved in the mayor’s murder. According to the reconstructions, Ridosso would have revealed to Cioffi that they had also “fixed” the “fisherman”, referring to Vassallo, after a meeting that took place in the days following the murder. This meeting, which took place in September 2010, was confirmed by Ridosso’s partner.

The investigations and the context

Cagnazzo, known for investigating Camorra clans in Naples, was already under investigation for his alleged involvement in the mayor’s death. Investigators believe Vassallo was murdered after he uncovered drug trafficking linked to the Camorra, informing former chief prosecutor Alfredo Greco of his findings.

The Angelo Vassallo Foundation expressed gratitude for the progress in the investigation and called for a full inspection of the Municipality of Pollica by the Minister of the Interior. The brothers of the slain mayor stressed that the fight for justice is only just beginning. Dario and Massimo Vassallo said that the moral and material damage caused by the murder is still palpable in the local community. The Foundation is collaborating with an investigation commission promoted by local politicians to shed light on the matter.

An uncertain but promising future

Fourteen years after the murder, recent developments offer new hope to the Vassallo family and the community of Pollica. Antonio Vassallo, the victim’s son, commented on the situation by saying that there are now new leads to follow and details to clarify. The road to justice is still long and complex, but with these arrests a new chapter opens in a story that has deeply affected Cilento. The search for the truth continues, fueled by the determination of the family and a renewed investigative context.
