Breakdown in negotiations for renewal of public contract
Negotiations for the renewal of the Central Functions contract 2022-2024 have reached a breaking point. The general secretaries of Fp-Cgil and Uil-Pa, Serena Sorrentino and Sandro Colombi, have expressed concern about the government and Aran’s decision to interrupt a discussion that, according to them, still contained room for improvement. They have stressed that the current text does not provide adequate answers to the needs of public sector workers.
The two trade unions speak of “forcing” by the government, especially in view of the meeting scheduled for Monday at Palazzo Chigi, where the dispute in the public sectors will also be discussed.
The mobilization continues
Maurizio Landini, general secretary of the Cgil, launched a strong appeal during the national assembly of delegates in Milan. He declared that the time has come for a “real social revolt”, stating that the current living and working conditions can no longer be tolerated. Landini emphasized the importance of placing issues such as wages, healthcare and economic stability at the center of politics.
The general strike scheduled for November 29 is seen as the beginning of a broader mobilization. According to Landini, the goal is not only to change the budget law, but to bring about significant changes in the country through referendums and other forms of popular participation.
A complex international context
Landini took the opportunity to also comment on the recent American elections and Donald Trump’s victory. He suggested that the anger expressed by American voters is linked to the deterioration of living conditions and the demand to end armed conflicts.
However, there was no shortage of criticism of Landini’s statements. Tommaso Foti, leader of the Brothers of Italy group in the Chamber, warned the union leader about the risk associated with his statements on social revolt, stressing that such incitements could constitute a crime. Foti also questioned the credibility of his positions after a significant increase in his salary.
A look to the future
The current situation in the public sector reflects broader tensions within Italian society. With growing worker dissatisfaction and a challenging economic environment, the future of union negotiations seems uncertain. The coming weeks will be crucial to understand whether a satisfactory agreement will be reached or whether mobilizations will continue to intensify.
