The arrival of the patrol vessel Libra in Albania

The Italian Navy patrol vessel Libra is sailing towards Albania with eight migrants on board, intercepted two days ago south of Lampedusa. The ship is expected tomorrow morning, where the asylum seekers will disembark in Shengjin and then be transferred to the reception center in Gjader.

“One wonders why Albania. The European regulation has tasked Italy, as a border country, to create over 8,000 places for the management and reception of migrants by 2026”, declared the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi during a hearing at the Schengen Committee.

Situation in Lampedusa

Last night, Lampedusa recorded the arrival of 71 migrants, while yesterday there were 16 landings that brought a total of 700 people. The Carabinieri tracked down four Tunisians, including a woman, who were heading independently towards the hotspot. These migrants reported that the skipper, also Tunisian, abandoned the group after disembarking them. Guardia di Finanza patrol boats stopped two boats with a total of 14 Tunisians and 52 migrants from Gambia, Ivory Coast, Malaysia and Senegal. The latter reported having paid approximately 1,200 Tunisian dinars each for the trip, departing from Djerba and Sfax respectively. Currently, the Lampedusa hotspot hosts 813 people, while the prefecture of Agrigento has planned the transfer of 302 migrants via the Sansovino ferry, scheduled for this evening in Porto Empedocle.

Future prospects

The migratory situation in the Mediterranean continues to raise questions about how European countries will manage the increasing flows. With the implementation of new European procedures and the creation of the necessary places in Italy, it is essential to monitor future developments and the policies adopted to address this complex humanitarian issue. Cooperation between Member States will be crucial to ensure sustainable and fair management of migration in the European context.
