Transport Strike: Safety at the Center of the Debate
A serious episode of violence on a regional train has triggered a series of inconveniences for travelers throughout Italy. The train strike, called by unions in response to the stabbing of a train conductor in Genoa Rivarolo, has caused significant disruptions, with cancellations and delays affecting the country’s main railway lines.
Workplace Violence
Trenitalia CEO Luigi Corradi confirmed that the assaulted train conductor, a 44-year-old man, was released from hospital with a prognosis of 14 days. The attack occurred while the employee was checking tickets on board regional train 12042. According to reconstructions, an argument with two young passengers degenerated into violence, culminating in the stabbing.
“An unacceptable aggression,” Corradi said during a hearing at the House Transportation Committee. This incident is part of a growing series of attacks on railway personnel.
The Strike Guarantor has declared that minimum services must be guaranteed even during the strike planned for Friday in local public transport.
Safety Measures and Future Investments
In response to growing insecurity, Trenitalia is implementing new security measures. Corradi announced the introduction of bodycams and cameras on trains to monitor conditions on board. In addition, “Fs Security” was created with the aim of strengthening protection for workers.
In the context of safety and punctuality, Corradi highlighted that 95% of high-speed trains reach punctuality, but this drops to 73% when additional external factors are considered. As for investments, Trenitalia plans 1.2 billion for new trains by 2025, while Italo is investing over 5 billion in strengthening its fleet.
Future Prospects
The violent episode highlights the urgent need to improve safety in Italian public transport. Trade unions expressed their determination to continue fighting for safer working conditions and rejected the Guarantor’s call to reduce the strike. The issue of safety is not just an immediate concern; it is a crucial issue that will require continued attention from the competent authorities and the companies involved.
The mobilization of workers and the demands for greater safety could mark the beginning of a new phase in the dialogue between unions and the government, with the ultimate goal of ensuring a safer environment for all commuters.
