Laura Bonafede sentenced to 11 years and 4 months for mafia association

The 11 years and 4 months sentence handed down to Laura Bonafede, a teacher from Campobello di Mazara and daughter of the well-known mafia boss Leonardo Bonafede, marks a significant chapter in the fight against the mafia in Sicily. The woman, romantically linked to the mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, was found guilty of mafia association after a trial held with an abbreviated procedure.

Sentence Details

The Palermo preliminary hearing judge also ordered her to be banned from holding public office and applied a personal security measure. Bonafede will have to serve three years of probation after her sentence. In addition to the prison sentence, she was sentenced to pay compensation to various public bodies and civil associations for a total of 70,000 euros.

  • 25,000 euros for the municipalities of Castelvetrano and Campobello di Mazara
  • 10,000 euros to the Ministry of Education and the Presidency of the Region
  • 3,000 euros each to various anti-mafia associations

The prosecution claims that Bonafede helped Messina Denaro maintain contact with the mafia’s men of honor, covering up his time as a fugitive.

Laura Bonafede’s Defense

In court, Laura Bonafede denied all charges, saying she had never been part of Cosa Nostra. She described her life as marked by a mafia family background, but insisted that she and her family never actively participated in illegal activities. During his spontaneous statements, he described his relationship with Messina Denaro as based on a childhood acquaintance rather than a criminal connection. He acknowledged having introduced his daughter Martina to the boss in a meeting that he now considers a mistake.

“I told this lie to my daughter,” Bonafede said, referring to the meeting between Messina Denaro and his daughter.

Future Prospects

This conviction is not only a response to the woman’s unlawful actions but also a clear message in the fight against the mafia in Sicily. With the authorities' focus on the issue of organized crime, it is expected that similar cases will be rigorously prosecuted. It is hoped that these sentences will contribute to a more just society free from the fear of the mafia, further encouraging victims to speak out and denounce the injustices they have suffered.
