Domestic violence and the world of work: a problem to be addressed

Domestic violence is not just a personal issue; it also has significant repercussions on the workplace. Recent research reveals that two out of three Italians believe that this phenomenon affects their professional life. Furthermore, 62% of those interviewed believe that companies should take an active role in the fight against gender violence. These data emerge from the latest report by OsservatorioD, drawn up by Swg for Valore D, presented today at the Casa Internazionale delle Donne in Rome.

A concrete project against gender violence

The project “From Silence to Action” was conceived to provide companies with practical tools to address and combat domestic violence. This initiative is the result of a collaboration between Valore D and Una Nessuna Centomila, a foundation dedicated to preventing violence against women.

The document aims to improve employee awareness on the topic, offering awareness-raising courses and psychological support. Companies can help create safer and more respectful environments through emergency management programs and safety measures. According to the data collected, over 70% of Italians recognize physical violence and sexual abuse as serious forms of domestic violence. However, surprisingly, 34% do not consider forced sexual intercourse as such.

Four stages to change

The “From Silence to Action” policy is divided into four main phases:

  • Inform: raise public awareness of the phenomenon of gender violence.
  • Uncover: Identify the signs and manifestations of domestic violence.
  • Support: Provide resources and tools to victims to help them reintegrate into working life.
  • Amplify: build inter-company networks involving anti-violence centers and institutions. Barbara Falcomer, CEO of Valore D, says “it’s time to join forces” to fight gender violence. She stresses the importance of corporate involvement in the cultural change needed to address this issue. Lella Palladino, vice president of Una Nessuna Centomila, adds that the project aims to transform indignation into concrete actions.

Towards a more conscious future

The involvement of companies in the fight against domestic violence is a fundamental step towards a culture of respect and freedom. If companies can act as catalysts for social change, the future could bring greater protection for victims and a more inclusive and safe working environment. The “From Silence to Action” initiative not only aims to shed light on a serious issue but also to stimulate a collective reaction to end gender-based violence in modern society.
