Third Term Approved for De Luca in Campania

Campania enters a new political phase with the approval of the regional law that allows Vincenzo De Luca to run for a third term as president of the Giunta. The decision, which has sparked fervent debate, was ratified by the regional council with 33 votes in favor, 16 against and 1 abstention.

Voting and Reaction Details

Support for the bill came mainly from the center-left majority groups, along with councilor Valeria Ciarambino of the mixed group. On the other side, the center-right and the 5 Star Movement expressed their opposition, along with councilor Maria Muscarà and the abstention of councilor Bruna Fiola of the Democratic Party. The president of the regional council, Giuseppe Sommese, clarified that the law establishes that those who have already held two consecutive mandates cannot be re-elected immediately. However, the counting of mandates will begin from the date of entry into force of the new legislation. Sommese stressed the importance of aligning regional legislation with national legislation, thus ensuring a legitimate legal framework.

“This law implements a national provision”, stated Sommese, highlighting the intention to make Campania legislation compliant with national standards.

Criticisms and Concerns

Despite its approval, the law is not without its challenges. Edmondo Cirielli, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and member of Fratelli d’Italia, has expressed doubts about the legal validity of the law. Cirielli also foresees that the central government could challenge this law, considering it potentially illegitimate. His statements risk fueling further controversy over De Luca’s political future and the work of the regional government. Critics fear that this legislative change could represent an attempt to consolidate power by the outgoing president.

Reflections on the Political Future

With this approval, Campania is preparing for an important electoral round. The possibility that De Luca will run for a third term raises questions about the future political dynamics in the region. Attention will now shift to the opposition’s reactions and the strategy that the parties will adopt to face this new political challenge. In a context in which political alliances are increasingly fluid, the near future could reserve significant surprises not only for De Luca but also for the entire political scene in Campania.
