Eruption of the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano
At least 10 people have died after the eruption of the volcano Lewotobi Laki-Laki, located in eastern Indonesia. The event occurred on the night between Sunday and Monday, as reported by the spokesman of the national agency for disaster management (BNPB), Abdul Muhari.
Current situation and evacuations
Indonesia’s volcano agency has raised its alert level to the highest in a four-level system. The move comes after an eruption hit the island of Flores, a popular tourist destination. A plume of ash and lava poured down on at least seven villages, prompting authorities to begin evacuations.
Media footage shows villages near the volcano completely covered in thick ash. Some homes have been damaged or even destroyed by the lava. Residents and tourists have been urged to keep at least seven kilometers away from the crater to ensure their safety.
Volcanic activity and precautions
“There has been a significant increase in volcanic activity on Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki,” the agency said in an official statement. There is also a risk of lava floods caused by rain, making precautionary measures necessary. The population has been advised to wear masks to protect themselves from the harmful effects of volcanic ash.
The volcano has already recorded several significant eruptions last January, a period in which the authorities had raised the alert level to the maximum level, evacuating at least 2,000 residents from the surrounding areas.
The situation remains closely monitored by the competent authorities, while experts continue to follow the evolution of volcanic activity to ensure the safety of citizens.
