Lazio takes third place
Mission accomplished for Lazio, who beat Cagliari with a score of 2-1 and secured third place in the standings, shared with Fiorentina and Atalanta. The Biancocelesti are now just three points from leaders Napoli.
A promising start
The evening starts well for Baroni, awarded as the best coach of the month of October. The coach deploys Noslin in place of Zaccagni in the offensive trident, supporting the striker Castellanos. On the other side, Nicola responds with Piccoli up front and Luvumbo, ready to put the Lazio defense in crisis with his accelerations.
Lazio takes the lead immediately thanks to a clumsy save from Cagliari goalkeeper Scuffet on a free kick taken by Pellegrini. Dia doesn’t need asking twice and effortlessly puts the ball into the net. Initially, it seems that Baroni’s team can dominate. However, a post hit by Castellanos interrupts this feeling of control.
The draw and the difficulties
Cagliari does not give up and begins to gain courage. Luvumbo finds space on the left and, thanks to a dirty shot that suffers an unfortunate deflection by Gila, gets the equaliser at 1-1 before the break.
In the second half, Baroni tries to change the cards on the table by replacing Noslin with Vecino and switching to 4-3-3. The Uruguayan has the opportunity to put Lazio back in the lead, but a save by Luperto denies him the goal.
Baroni then decides to insert Pedro to look for the wild card. Castellanos comes close to scoring again with a right-footed volley that grazes the post.
The victory in the final
The decisive move comes from Pellegrini, who wins a penalty after beating Zortea. Zaccagni, who has just come on after gastroenteritis, converts the penalty and scores 2-1.
In the end, the situation becomes even more complicated for Cagliari: Mina is sent off after a second yellow and Adopo follows him to the locker room for protests. In numerical inferiority, Cagliari is no longer able to react, while Lazio manages the game.
With this victory, the Biancocelesti are dreaming big, while the Rossoblu are suffering their third consecutive defeat, remaining trapped in the hot zone of the standings.
