Arrest of a Student in Iran

The video of the Iranian student has gone viral, sparking anguish over her fate. On Saturday, the young woman was arrested at Tehran’s Azad University after she protested the forced veil by stripping down to her underwear.

Fears and References to Mahsa Amini

Since then, there has been no news of her, and the fear is that she may suffer violence similar to that which affected Mahsa Amini, arrested two years ago for not wearing the veil correctly and died because of the beatings of the police. Her tragic death gave rise to the movement “Woman, Life, Freedom”. Student sources say the girl (identified by some as Ahoo Daryaei) was initially reprimanded by security for wearing her hijab inappropriately. In protest, she took off her clothes, revealing only her panties and bra. In the video, she is seen sitting in the courtyard surrounded by incredulous students.

Arrest and International Reactions

After walking away, she was forced into a car by men who took her away. Amnesty International called for her immediate release, citing “allegations of beatings and sexual violence” during her arrest and calling for “independent and impartial investigations.” According to Iran International, the girl was transferred to a psychiatric hospital on the orders of the Revolutionary Guards intelligence. This circumstance was also confirmed by the newspaper Farhikhtegan. The university’s public relations director stated that she suffers from “severe psychological distress”. However, many Iranians denounce this maneuver by the regime as a tactic to delegitimize the protesters.

A New Symbol of Resistance

In memory of Mahsa Amini, the world is watching carefully what is happening in Tehran. The United Nations special rapporteur for human rights in Iran, Maio Sato, said: “I will monitor the situation closely”. Meanwhile, tributes to the girl’s “heroic courage” are multiplying on social media, with appeals and drawings. Her image in underwear has already become a new symbol of Iranian women’s struggle for freedom.
