Royal Visit to the Flood Zones
King Felipe VI arrived in the areas affected by the floods in Spain, accompanied by his wife Letizia and the Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The visit was greeted with tension and protests by the population, especially in Paiporta, one of the most devastated centers.
“Murderers!” shouted the crowd as the king and prime minister approached.
Despite the security cordon, many people tried to get close to the sovereign, who attempted to shelter from the rain with umbrellas.
Critical Situation and Victims
With the discovery of a woman’s body in Letur (Albacete), the death toll rises to 214 people: 210 in Valencia, 3 in Castilla-La Mancha and 1 in Andalusia. In Valencia, rescue and cleanup work continues under a severe storm alert.
Currently, 7,500 members of the army are mobilized to help in the search for the missing, along with 5,000 police officers and civil guards. Although electricity has been restored to 94% of the users, there are still 7,000 people without electricity and thousands without drinking water.
Research and Health Alert
Hopes of finding survivors among the missing are dwindling. Searches are concentrated in the parking lots of shopping centers, including that of the Bonaire shopping center in Aldaia, where dozens of victims are feared trapped.
“We are not yet able to say how many cars are parked,” said a spokesman for the Emergency Unit (EMU).
The Valencian Region’s Department of Health has also issued an alert regarding the contamination of drinking water. There are risks of gastrointestinal infections caused by pathogens such as E. coli and Salmonella, especially among vulnerable people:
“If the person has low defenses or is very old, the symptoms may be more severe.”
Traffic in the affected areas is limited to emergency vehicles and residents, while the local government is coordinating operations to address the emergency with the utmost urgency.
