Iranian Student Protests and Arrests

A student at the Islamic Azad University of Tehran has staged a massive protest by removing her clothes outside the university. This action came after the young woman was attacked by police for wearing a headscarf in an inappropriate way. The video of her protest, in which she appears in her underwear and bra, quickly went viral.

“Following an indecent act by a female student at the university, campus security intervened and handed her over to the police authorities,” said Amir Mahjoub, general director of public relations at the university. The student’s situation is currently under investigation.

Monitoring by the Authorities

Maio Sato, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, announced on X that she is actively involved in monitoring the case. She said:

“I will closely monitor the situation, including the response of the authorities.” At the moment, there is no further news about the girl, while on social media there is growing concern about her condition. Several people express solidarity with her and ask that her rights be respected.

Amnesty International’s demands

Amnesty International has also spoken out on the issue, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the young woman. The organization has urged the authorities to:

  • Protect the student from torture and other ill-treatment.
  • Ensure access to family and lawyer. Amnesty also raised concerns about alleged incidents of beatings and sexual violence during arrest, calling for investigations to be “independent and impartial”. The situation remains tense and continues to attract attention both nationally and internationally.
