Two weeks after the referendum that saw a “yes” vote on EU membership, Moldova went to the polls again for the presidential runoff, a crucial event for the country’s European future, threatened by the shadow of possible Russian interference. The outgoing president Maia Sandu, 52, a supporter of pro-Western orientations who detached Moldova from Moscow following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is facing Alexandr Stoianoglo, a former prosecutor supported by the pro-Russian socialists. Although analysts are not making predictions about the results, a very heated confrontation is widely expected. There are fears of Russian interference, similar to that seen in the recent elections in Georgia, despite the Kremlin’s firm responses to these accusations. In the first round of the elections, held on 20 October, Sandu had obtained 42.5% of the vote, while Stoianoglo had collected almost 26%. In addition, the 57-year-old candidate can count on significant support from other opposition candidates with similar positions. Polls opened at 7 a.m. and will close at 9 p.m.; the first partial results are expected one hour after the closing of the polls. The outcome of this vote represents a decisive moment for Moldova and could significantly influence its international relations and future political choices.
