A 75-year-old woman had a 30-kilogram tumor removed. The patient, who had been suffering from severe abdominal pain and a noticeable increase in the size of her belly, went to the emergency room of the hospital in Chieti. Radiological tests revealed the presence of a mass in the pelvic area. The true extent of the tumor emerged only during surgery, when gynecologist Alessandro Lucidi and his team were incredulous at the enormous growth that had to be removed.

Lucidi, who has extensive experience in gynecological and oncological surgery accumulated in renowned facilities such as Gemelli, said that this was an unprecedented case. Due to the exceptional size of the mass, the team had to adopt a traditional open surgical approach, while normally the minimally invasive technique with the da Vinci robot is used. The size of the tumor further complicated the operation, making it difficult to restore the integrity of the blood vessels and tissues.

During the operation, in addition to the tumor mass, the uterus and ovaries were also removed, along with samples for histological analysis necessary to determine the stage of the tumor. The patient, originally from a European Union country but resident in the province of Chieti, is doing well and is expected to remain in hospital for further monitoring of her post-operative recovery. It will be up to pathologists to identify the specific type of neoplasia to define the subsequent phases of treatment.

Over the past twelve months, the Gynecology and Obstetrics team in Chieti has diagnosed and treated over 60 cases of endometrial carcinoma. This result was possible thanks to the Hysteroscopy clinics in the hospitals of Ortona and Chieti, directed by Donata Pizzigallo and Ettore Clementini. A fundamental aspect was the multidisciplinary management involving gynecologists, radiotherapists, pathologists and anesthetists. This activity allowed the center to obtain the indicators required by the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) to obtain certification as a Reference Center for endometrial carcinoma surgery.
