A 75-year-old woman had a 30-kg tumor removed. The patient, suffering from severe pain and a significant increase in the size of her abdomen, presented herself to the emergency room of the hospital in Chieti. Radiological examinations revealed a mass in the pelvic area. The surprising size and weight of the growth became evident only during surgery, when gynecologist Alessandro Lucidi and his team were amazed by the exceptional size of the mass to be removed.

Lucidi, known for his long career in gynecological surgery, especially oncology, commented: “To call this case exceptional is an understatement. Such a volume had never been seen before.” Faced with the situation, the team had to resort to traditional open surgery, as they usually use the minimally invasive technique with the da Vinci robot in oncology operations. The complexity of the operation was accentuated by the size of the mass, which limited movement and complicated the restoration of the integrity of the vessels and tissues. During the operation, the uterus and ovaries were also removed, along with samples for histological analysis necessary for staging the tumor.

The patient, originally from a European Union country but resident in the province of Chieti, is now in good condition and will continue to be monitored in the hospital for a few days due to the extent of the surgery she underwent. It will be up to pathologists to determine the type of neoplasia to define the next steps in the therapeutic path.

In the previous twelve months, the Gynecology and Obstetrics team of Chieti has diagnosed and treated over 60 cases of endometrial carcinoma. This is thanks to the support of the Hysteroscopy clinics of the hospitals of Ortona and Chieti, managed by Donata Pizzigallo and Ettore Clementini, and to the multidisciplinary collaboration between gynecologists, radiotherapists, pathologists and anesthetists. This approach has allowed the center to reach the standards required by the European Society of Gynecological Oncology (ESGO) to obtain certification as a Reference Center for endometrial carcinoma surgery.
