There could be significant developments, 44 years later, in the disappearance of Jeanette Bishop, former Baroness Rothschild, and her Italian assistant Gabriella Guerin, who mysteriously disappeared in the Sibillini Mountains in 1980. The prosecutor of Macerata, Fabrizio Narbone, did not reveal specific details about the ongoing investigation but confirmed that the case into the deaths of the two women has been reopened, as reported by the programme ‘Quarto Grado’. The crime hypothesis being investigated is that of double homicide. This suggests that the two women may have been killed. Narbone told ANSA that a breakthrough is expected “in a few months”, stressing that there have been no new events to motivate the reopening of the case. However, the prosecutor highlighted the importance of this moment in trying to shed light on a story that has remained unsolved for a long time. He also added that numerous witnesses are being interviewed.
The review of the previous documents has led to the possibility of contradictions and to believe that there may be chances to get to the truth. As the years go by, the people involved or aware of the facts are fewer and fewer and this makes the investigation more urgent. Some witnesses have already been heard, but many of the main actors in the story are deceased. Among the hunters who discovered the remains of the two women in the area of the cemetery of Potalla di Fiastra, one is still alive and another no longer lives in the area. Furthermore, Daniele Talocco, an important witness of the time who had seen Jeanette and Gabriella before their disappearance, died four years ago.
The two women were present in the area to follow the renovation of a farmhouse purchased by Jeanette in Contrada Schito and were supposed to meet with a surveyor who was never reached. On the day of their disappearance, after leaving the hotel in Pini around 5:00 p.m., they headed towards the Sibillini mountains, braving a heavy snowfall. Their bodies were found only in January 1982 in a wooded area in Podalla di Fiastra, after weeks of fruitless searches. Their car was spotted only 17 days after their disappearance during an air flyover by the Carabinieri. To date, the municipality of Fiastra has erected a votive shrine in memory of the two victims.
